Artificial intelligence (or deep learning) is revolutionizing every industry by detecting patterns in data that humans are incapable of recognizing. Convolutional neural networks, in particular, are outperforming humans at a wide array of image recognition tasks while delivering real-time results. The trade-off for this improved performance is a lack of control or understanding of the patterns an algorithm uses to make a decision. This poses a major dilemma in medicine: how do we leverage advances in AI in a manner that ensures medically relevant information is used to make a final determination that is safe for patients? Dr. Amelon will discuss his own experience with deep learning algorithms - both its advantages and pitfalls - and how IDx's approach to artificial intelligence aligns with foundational medical knowledge.
